Addiction 101

Addiction 101 Workshop

Speaker: Mary McMasters, MD, DFASAM

Description:  You’ve had YEARS of undergrad science.  Then you had more in your health professions school.  But, how much science teaching did you receive about the disease of Addiction?  Compare that with all the science you received about Diabetes.  Did you know that the prevalence of the disease of Addiction equals the prevalence of Diabetes in the United States?  These patients are in your office, across the desk from you, begging for help —or for controlled substances — and you don’t know where to begin.  There is help!!  For you AND for them.  Join us for Addiction Medicine 101.

This course is a quick introduction to the basic science of Addiction taught by a board-certified Addictionologist.  (Yes, there IS science that can be applied to the disease of Addiction.)  This course covers basic definitions, pathophysiology, diagnosis and most importantly, the correct approach when triaging and treating people with the disease of Addiction.  Addiction IS treatable.  People CAN get better.

ADDICTION 101 is a three-four hour course which will be available at VaSAM’s Annual Conference.   Organizations may also contact us regarding individualized presentations.

All the poster topics were good so it was hard to choose the best. I am inspired to join in the poster presentations next year.

VASAM Annual Conference Attendee

I especially benefited from Neurobiology by Dr Ajay Manhapra and the concept of peer support specialist from Dr. Thompson. Having the distinguished State Official present made me feel good that someone in his high position was interested in the stepchild, Addiction Medicine.
